Bigfoot Biomedical will soon be offering a closed loop system that includes an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitoring device. Their system includes some advancements from the first generation of these systems. One important one is that it automatically monitors and regulates the basal insulin level. As a Type I diabetic, I have shied away from pumps but warmed to continuous glucose monitoring devices. Pumps are expensive to replace if you fall on them while playing basketball or some other active sport, for example. If this closed loop system is as easy to administer as promised, and if it durable and easily worn on the body, it will be the new norm in the not too distant future. Very cool!
