Making Diabetes Affordable
Actually, I am talking about the cost of diabetes testing equipment. For years the cost of testing strips has bee so high that insurance companies carefully monitor monthly usage to make sure that they are not paying for anything beyond what the doctor prescribed. Most diabetics who are serious about their care tend to use a lot of test strips. Now Abbott has come out with an over-the-counter meter and test strip combo that carries a very modest cost. One other cool thing about this meter is that, unlike other low-cost meters, it actually stores up to 1,000 readings that can be downloaded by a physician. The hope is that by creating a testing system that is outside of insurance, more diabetics will be willing to pony up and take better care.
